It was about time. It’s always about time.

TEDWomen’s theme this year was about time. It was about the essence of time. How and why it matters to every person regardless of age, race and status. How we perceive time, how we choose to spend it and ultimately what we want to and should be doing with our time. TEDWomen was presented in California, USA and transported through a global conversation to Nicosia via TEDxNicosiaWomen.

It’s about time…you met our speakers

The power of a photograph is undeniable. Every element within that picture plays a powerful role in telling a story. Portrait photography may rely on a single element, however its objective is no different. Andri Josef, of AJphotoart talked about her inspiration behind the photography of TEDxNicosiaWomen’s five speakers. “Portrait photography is always a challenge as the photographer is called upon to use light, background, colours and the position of the subject in the most appropriate creative combination,” she said.  “But creativity has to serve a purpose. In the case of TEDxNicosiaWomen speakers, I was looking for an imaginative way to put my subjects in context, to link them to the event. Choosing B&W photography, I positioned my subjects against the background of a large X which was created with a spotlight. This linked my subjects to TEDx in a subtle way that does not distract the viewer.” When asked,…

Portraits Defined

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

When TEDxNicosia photographer Andri Josef – AJphotoart – thought about the theme TRACES [ίχνη] she had an extraordinary idea.Given the opportunity to meet the speakers before the event of 7th May 2016, she fantasized a combination of photography, design, portraits, words. With this in mind, she was able to capture speaker portraits, to which she then applied a technique that used technology, information, and, algorithms in a pop up studio which was created. Andri believed in the power of words and how these encapsulate speakers themselves. An algorithm was set over the portrait photographs, which took the TEDxNicosia promo trailer and deciphered words and phrases. The red, black and white images shown below were then created. As an artist, Andri captured portraits which are defined in more ways than the mere image of a face; a portrait has become the amalgamation of a creative process.             Photo Credits: Andri Josef – AJPhotoart…

But traces were left behind…

It felt like hearing the first few notes of a great song coming on the radio. The feeling you get when you start tapping the steering wheel, then you turn up the volume just a little and start swaying your head. And before you know it the whole world goes away. Taking part in my first major TEDxNicosia event felt exactly like that.I was lucky to begin my TEDx journey, as a volunteer and official blogger for the team, with a bang. Because this year’s theme, Traces, was embraced early on with the successful Wheels and Traces pre-event and a huge interest shown in the 15 speakers and singing and dancing performances that were lined up. It was the reason the Nicosia Municipality was lit red days before the event and that has only ever happened in New York when the Empire State Building was shining bright and red in…

Wheels and Traces

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

I cradled my eight month old baby bump as I watched 150 cyclists race by me. I waved and cheered but deep down I was envious. They were about to take part in a one-of-a-kind cycling TEDxNicosia pre-event. The type of event that is actually unprecedented. One that is so unique and so well-suited to our historical capital, it didn’t matter that I would be watching from the sidelines. As long as I was a part of it. TEDxNicosia’s next big event will take place on May 7 at the Satiriko Theatre. Amazing speakers have been announced, surprises of all sorts are being prepared but before all this happens, the team decided to give an appropriate introduction to the event’s theme: Traces [ίχνη] Cyprus is full of traces left by historical footprints, all of which are the summation of a journey, our island’s journey. In Nicosia, our capital, there are…

We tracked down and interviewed past speakers to find out what they have been up to since they were on the TEDxNicosia stage.   Maria Vilanidou We constantly find ourselves out of balance said Maria Vilanidou at TEDxNicosia in 2013. And she’s right. There seems to be a constant battle between rational and emotional, right and wrong, together or alone, success or failure, seriousness or playfulness, material or spiritual. But can’t we be both? What was your idea worth spreading at TEDxNicosia about? Choosing to embrace our spiritual self for the purpose of finding a healthy balance through integrating the material and the spiritual worlds thus opening ourselves to our wholeness. Did you receive any feedback after your talk? If so, what was it? I was happy to hear that there were people who enjoyed the talk. They experienced the talk as calming, inspiring and overwhelmingly refreshing.  They loved how the…

We tracked down and interviewed past speakers to find out what they have been up to since they were on the TEDxNicosia stage. And these particular three have the distinction of collaborating on the same future project, the Mediterranean Science Festival.   Katerina Kaouri During Katerina Kaouri’s talk at TEDxNicosia in 2013, Romeo and Juliet took part in a math equation. Oozing originality, Katerina was on a mission to prove that not only can math be fun and exciting, the subject is part of our lives in more ways than one. What was your idea worth spreading at TEDxNicosia about? The theme of TEDxNicosia 2013 was “Re-think-Re-act-Re-generate”. My talk was on “Rethinking and Rebranding Mathematics”. As a mathematician, and university educator I am frequently faced with students and other people’s dislike and fear of Math. This saddens me since Math is a wonderful science that can help people’s lives in…

We tracked down and interviewed past speakers to find out what they’ve been up to since they were on the TEDxNicosia stage.   Eloiza Savvidou During her talk at TEDxNicosia 2013, Eloiza Savvidou had some thought-provoking questions for the audience: Was it your choice to work from 9 to 5? Was it your choice to retire at 65 and not 35? Why are we leading lives that do not bring us happiness? Looking ahead at your final moments will you say that your life was whatever you wanted it to be? What was your idea worth spreading at TEDxNicosia about? It was about how small shifts in the way we see the world can have a big impact in designing a history and a life that we love and are proud of. Did you receive any feedback after your talk? If so, what was it? A number of people contacted…
